The Need for Increased Investment in Cyber Security in the Philippines

Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy stated on Monday that millions of people were impacted by the data breach in the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) system.

Sadly, millions of dollars are involved. When asked how many people were affected by the data breach, Uy told reporters that work on it was 90% complete. "But the number might decrease because there were duplicates," he added.

As a result of their inability to obtain the money they demanded, the hackers, according to him, may sell the information to scammers and phishers.

To "gamitin" (use their data), he said, "they will try to monetize the information by selling to scammers, to phishers.

Uy claims that investigators are still working to determine whether the hackers are foreigners or Filipinos.

In this episode, the hosts discuss cyber security in the Philippines with guest Ronald Gustilo, the National Campaigner of Digital Pinoys.

They focus on recent data breaches in the country, particularly the Philippine health insurance. The hosts compare the situation in the Philippines to Australia, where there are strict privacy laws and penalties for data breaches.

Ronald provides insights into the state of cyber security in the Philippines and the challenges faced in protecting data. Tune in to learn more about the current landscape of cyber security in the Philippines.
