An urgent national cabinet meeting on men's violence against women has been scheduled for this Wednesday by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
He declared that reforms and a greater emphasis on apprehending offenders were imperative for all federal governments in the country, including his own.
The Prime Minister participated in the Canberra leg of a nationwide walkabout movement on Sunday afternoon to call for an end to gender-based violence. Along for the stroll were Ministers of Social Services Amanda Rishworth and Finance and Women Katy Gallagher.
He made the following statement during the rally: "We are here today to demand that governments of all levels, including my own, including every state and territory government, do better."
Family violence, according to Mr. Albanese, is a "national crisis," but the national emergency declaration is a temporary legal tool meant to be used in natural disasters.
He went on, "We must alter the culture. Our attitudes must shift. The legal system has to be modified. All governments must adopt a different strategy because helping victims is insufficient. Both prevention and the offenders must be our main priorities.
At the Wednesday meeting, Mr. Albanese said we'll talk about what we can do, including as part of the national plan to end violence against women and children. In the first two budgets, we've added $2.3 billion.
He also said that in the time we've been in government, we've allocated funding for 500 domestic violence workers.
“We now have 10 days paid domestic violence leave. He agreed that it's not enough. I said that. We need to do more. We have an escaping violence payment and we have access to housing through the Housing Australia Future Fund. We do have funding for training for frontline workers, $50 million that we put in the last budget.,” He revealed.

Prominent figures and neighbourhood advocates demanded an end to violence against women at multiple rallies across Australia, including one in Canberra. The rally's organisers reported that in 2024, domestic abuse and a stabbing in Bondi Junction involving a suspect who is believed to have targeted women in particular claimed the lives of over thirty women due to acts of male aggression.
In Victoria's Federation Square, thousands of protesters were joined by State Premier Jacinta Allan and Federal Attorney General Mark Dreyfus. Allan stated to reporters, "We need to get on with tackling men's violence and stop talking about women's safety."
