Deepfakes and Voice Clones: A Threat to Australian Democracy
The Australian Electoral Commission expects AI-generated misinformation at the next federal election, possibly from overseas actors, but it doesn't have the tools to detect or deter it.
On Monday, a parliamentary committee on artificial intelligence warned that deepfakes and voice clones of Anthony Albanese or Peter Dutton could threaten “democracy itself” before the next election.
Tom Rogers, the AEC commissioner, told the hearing that the new technology had “amazing productivity benefits” but noted “widespread examples” of AI-generated deceptive content in recent elections in Pakistan, the US, Indonesia, and India.
Rogers told the hearing that the AEC lacks the legislative tools or internal technical capability to deter, detect, or adequately deal with false AI-generated election content, such as where to vote, how to cast a formal vote, and why the electoral process may not be secure or trustworthy.

A revolutionary new weapon in the battle against influenza
By Vinod RMT Balasubramaniam, Monash University in Kuala Lumpur
Clinical trials of an mRNA vaccine have begun and researchers expect broadly positive outcomes in the battle against the widespread illness.
Influenza kills up to 650,000 people around the world each year.
Ninety-nine percent of deaths in children under five years of age in developing countries are due to influenza-related infections, according to the World Health Organization.

Art events ahead of The Doyles Art Award and Exhibition
Celebrating its 20th year, The Doyles Art Award and Exhibition is poised to spark creativity across the Gold Coast with a series of art activities planned both leading up to and during the week-long event.
Against the backdrop of Mudgeeraba’s historic buildings, a selection of operators will deliver art workshops, some of which are free, tailored for beginners and advanced creatives.
Event Director Sam Sinner says as a significant component of The Doyles Art Award and Exhibition, there are many workshops to choose from before and during the exhibition.
“The Doyles involves more than the exhibition and award, there are so many community events on offer, including creative rock painting, life drawing, macramé workshops and more,” says Ms Sinner.
“For a full list of our events, simply visit our website or checkout out our Facebook page, where everyone can easily access the exciting line up of activities, some are free, and others require bookings and a fee.”
The Gold Coast Urban Sketchers will be hosting a free sketching session of the Mudgeeraba’s Village Green on Saturday 29 June between 9.00am and 1.00pm with a selection of materials available for newcomers interested in the worldwide phenomenon of urban sketching.
